Obstetrics
Alexandra Marine and General Hospital (AMGH) provides comprehensive services to obstetrical patients in Huron County. We provide care to women throughout their obstetrical journey.
Antenatal Care
This encompasses the medical attention and support provided from the confirmation of conception until the onset of labor. This care typically includes regular check-ups, screenings, and assessments to monitor the health of both the mother and the developing fetus. The goal is to ensure a healthy pregnancy, identify any potential complications early, and provide guidance on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Antenatal care also prepares expectant mothers for childbirth and offers education on parenting and newborn care.
Intrapartum Care
At AMGH, we ensure comprehensive care throughout the childbirth journey, from the onset of labor until delivery. As a Level 1a facility, our team includes obstetricians, GP obstetricians, anesthetists, and general surgeons, all dedicated to the well-being of our patients and their unborn children. Depending on each individual's condition and circumstances, we may refer a laboring mother to a partner organization in London or Stratford, always prioritizing safety and health. Such decisions are typically made before active labor begins. Additionally, we offer a variety of pain relief options to enhance the birthing experience.
Postpartum Care
Care is provided immediately following birth until discharge home. During this time, the newborn will room with the mother, with nursing staff focusing on the new mom's recovery from birth and health education. Health education includes newborn care, post-delivery self-care, and breastfeeding your infant.
Newborn Care
This is the care provided to each newborn from time of delivery until the time of discharge home. The nursing staffs provide comprehensive assessments of each newborn throughout their stay and administer routine care. Health teaching is a critical part of this time period to assure the new parents have all the information they need to safely discharge home.
Occasionally, newborns require a higher level due to complications that may arise. AMGH will promptly facilitate a nurse accompanied transfer (and doctor if necessary) to a facility that can meet the needs of the infant. Typically this would involve Stratford or London. Once the infant is stable, we welcome them back to our facility to meet any ongoing needs.
Prenatal Clinic
To assist in maintaining obstetric services, we have established a Prenatal Clinic located on the second floor of AMGH in Goderich. Patients may self refer or be referred by their family practitioner.
