Alexandra Marine and General Hospital (AMGH) has 20 beds dedicated to inpatient acute care, which includes medical issues and post-operative care. Our medical patients are cared for by an interdisciplinary team that may include the following:
AMGH primarily serves individuals with cardiovascular and respiratory diseases or illnesses, as well as gastrointestinal disorders. Our facility boasts a robust lab, diagnostic imaging, and cardiorespiratory outpatient department, allowing us to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care. The medicine unit team convenes daily to plan inpatient care. This interdisciplinary team utilizes these meetings to discuss and prioritize each patient's needs and preferences to ensure tailored and effective care.
Intensive Care Level II
AMGH offers critical care beds with a higher intensity of monitoring. Nursing staff caring for these patients have completed advanced education to manage patient with critical needs. Our intensive care team provides comprehensive care to those individuals who have suffered heart related issues such myocardial infarction (heart attack).
Medical coverage of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is provided by General Practitioners, in consultation with Anesthesiologists and Internal Medicine as needed.
Telestroke
AMGH is a designated Telestroke site for Southwestern Ontario. Patients presenting stroke symptoms are evaluated in our ER department to determine if they qualify for treatment with tPA, which is used for ischemic strokes. An ischemic stroke occurs when a clot obstructs blood flow to the brain. tPA dissolves these clots, but it is most effective when administered within four and a half hours of the onset of symptoms. Patients receiving tPA require close monitoring and one-to-one care by specially trained nurses. The nurses in AMGH's ICU are trained to care for Telestroke patients according to Best Practice Guidelines.
