The Alexandra Marine and General Hospital's (AMGH) Dialysis Unit opened on May 23, 2001, as a satellite of the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) Renal Program. We have six stations that accommodate 12 patients per day on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Hemodialysis treatments range from 3 to 4.5 hours, depending on the individual patient's condition. All patients are assessed in London before using AMGH's Dialysis Unit. The Goderich satellite dialysis unit serves local patients with clinically stable renal failure who require hemodialysis. If a patient cannot be safely dialyzed, they are returned to the London Health Sciences Centre until their condition improves.
Care Team
The Dialysis Unit is staffed by specially trained nurses and Dialysis Unit Assistants and is supported by the Nephrology staff of London Health Science Centre (LHSC). Every 4 to 5 weeks, a nephrologist and nurse practitioner visit the site for face-to-face patient assessments and to adjust medications or dialysis treatments based on patient reviews and drug/blood work analyses. Between these visits, biweekly telemedicine conferences and patient care rounds are conducted with the team in London.
